HDCS
A two-sided sell sheet and an executive roundtable deck for HDCS, a Colorado compliance firm helping banks serve the cannabis industry safely.

01 — Context
Compliance sell sheet design for bankers
HDCS, short for Higher-Risk Deposit Compliance Solutions, is a Colorado firm that helps banks work with cannabis-related businesses without putting their charter at risk. Together with its partner RLR Management Consulting, it implements compliance programs, screens prospective cannabis customers and monitors accounts once they are open.
That is a hard thing to sell. The audience is bank executives and boards, who are cautious by profession and wary of anything that sounds like a pitch. HDCS asked us for compliance sell sheet design that would feel polished and credible enough to leave behind after a meeting or send to a prospect cold, and then for a presentation deck to anchor an executive roundtable. Both pieces had to look like they came from bankers, because the message was literally "Designed by Bankers for Bankers." Our finance and insurance work tends to start from the same place: earn trust first, then explain.
02 — Sell sheet
Opening the "Cannabis Talk" on one page
The front of the sheet does two jobs. On the left, a large green circle carries the headline, "Introducing a solution for Safely Banking the Cannabis Industry," and a tilted page lists the three things HDCS does: implement the compliance program, screen cannabis-related businesses (CRBs), and provide ongoing monitoring. Each gets a simple line icon, a bank, a magnifying seal and an eye, that we reused later in the deck.
On the right, the tone shifts to a direct question for the reader: "Why your Bank and your Board should have the 'Cannabis Talk.'" A short paragraph makes the case (cannabis was legal in 33 states, so a bank may already be serving it) and a checklist sets out every service in the program.
The back turns the abstract into something tangible. We drew the actual working documents a bank receives, a policy table of contents, a risk assessment, a due diligence checklist and a board reporting chart, fanned out like papers on a desk. A black band carries the contact details. It is marketing collateral design built around showing, not claiming.

03 — Roundtable deck
A deck for the Cannabis Banking Executive Roundtable
The sell sheet opened conversations. The deck had to hold a room. HDCS was hosting a Cannabis Banking Executive Roundtable on February 26, 2020, and needed a long-form presentation that could take bankers from the basics of the industry through regulation, market size and risk.
We built it as a template system for presentation design that the HDCS team could keep extending. Every content slide shares a black tab at the top, a heavy slab-serif headline, and a black footer bar with the logo, page number and a confidentiality line. Section openers break the rhythm with full-bleed photography, so the audience always knows when a new chapter starts.

04 — Data slides
Maps and charts a board can read in seconds
Much of the roundtable rested on data: where cannabis was legal, how fast the market was growing, and which states had hemp plans in place. Spreadsheets would have lost the room, so we turned each data set into a single graphic.
The "On the Ballot" slide colours a US map by legal status and stacks the headline figures in black circles alongside it. "Big & Getting Bigger" is a plain bar chart, actuals in yellow and projections in green, with the source credited underneath. "Where are we today?" uses a five-step colour key for hemp plan status by state.
We kept to the brand's green, yellow and red throughout, the same three colours as the traffic-light mark in the HDCS logo, so meaning carries from slide to slide. This is the kind of work our infographics practice is built for.

05 — Frameworks
Turning compliance into clear frameworks
The rest of the deck explains how HDCS thinks. We gave each idea its own visual structure. "Coming to Terms" maps the vocabulary a banker hears, from THC and CBD to CRB, MRB and Safe Harbour, around a single leaf icon. "Tiers of CRB's" sorts businesses into three colour-coded rows, from those that touch the plant to those that simply have cannabis clients.
"Understanding the Risks" reuses the three sell sheet icons as Foundation, Screening and Monitoring, so the program looks the same on paper and on screen. "What to avoid?" lists warning signs with yellow alert icons. The audience is skeptical by nature; we wrote the visual language for them, which is the theme of our article on designing for your audience, not yourself.
