WordPress Development
WordPress, without the templates.
WordPress powers a huge share of the web for good reason. We use it to build custom websites your team can edit with confidence, designed from scratch and built without bloat.
A WordPress site is only as good as the way it’s built. Off-the-shelf themes and stacks of plugins make sites slow, fragile and hard to change. We build WordPress the way it should be: custom, lean and made for the people who will use it every day.
What is custom WordPress development?
Your design. Your content. Your control.
Custom WordPress development means building a WordPress website from your own design instead of a purchased theme. Every page template, block and setting is made for your content, so editing is simple and nothing on the page exists without a reason.
You get the editing freedom WordPress is known for without the trade-offs: no theme lock-in, no page builder slowing things down, no dozen plugins doing the job of one. It is how we built sites like Rosalie Hall and Tribal Custom Insurance.

What you get with a custom WordPress build.
Built for editors, not just for launch day.
Ready for a WordPress site you’ll actually enjoy editing?

How we build WordPress sites.
The same process as every Envy website, with a few extra steps to make sure editing is a pleasure.
-
01Plan
Content Modelling
We map your pages, posts and reusable blocks so the WordPress editor matches how your team actually works. If you publish case studies, events or staff bios, they get their own tidy structure instead of being squeezed into a generic page.
Getting the content model right early means updating your site feels obvious rather than fiddly. It also gives us a clear picture of every type of content the custom design needs to handle, which is exactly where we go next.

-
02Design
Custom Design
Your WordPress site is designed from scratch in Figma around your brand and goals. No off-the-shelf theme, no layout someone else down the street is also using, and no bending your content to fit a template that was never meant for you.
Because the content model is already mapped, every design reflects the real pages and posts you’ll be publishing. You review and approve the designs before development starts, so the custom theme has a clear target.

-
03Build
Theme Development
We build a lean custom WordPress theme and only the plugins you need, on a private staging site you can review as it comes together. Fewer plugins means fewer updates to juggle, fewer security headaches and a faster site.
The editor is set up around the content model we planned, so your team sees the blocks and fields they need and not a cluttered dashboard. Once the theme is complete, every template heads into testing.

-
04Test
Testing & Training
We test every template before launch, across browsers and devices, checking that layouts hold, forms work and pages load quickly. If something breaks, we’d much rather find it than have your customers find it.
Then we train your team to use WordPress the way your site was built: adding pages, publishing posts and working with your custom blocks. By launch day, you’ll know your way around the dashboard and be ready to take the wheel.

-
05Launch
Launch & Care
We launch with redirects in place, so old URLs point to their new homes and your search rankings carry over. Launch day is handled by us, start to finish.
After that, we keep WordPress, plugins and backups up to date. WordPress maintenance isn’t glamorous, but skipping it is how sites end up slow or hacked. With us minding the technical side, you’re free to focus on your content and the business behind it.

WordPress done properly.
You get the freedom to edit your own site and none of the headaches that usually come with WordPress. We design every page from scratch, build it without heavy page builders and set up the editor around your content, so updates are quick and the site stays fast for years.
Designed first
Every template starts as a custom design, not a theme demo. Your site looks like your brand rather than a familiar theme with the colours swapped, and includes only what it actually needs.
Fast by default
No page builders, no bloat and optimized media. Lean code and properly sized images keep pages quick on any connection, which visitors notice and search engines reward.
Easy to edit
Blocks and fields are named in plain language and built around your content. Your team can add a page, update a bio or post news without worrying about breaking the layout.
Looked after
Optional maintenance keeps WordPress core, plugins and security current. We test updates before they go live and keep regular backups, so your site stays safe without becoming another job on your list.
We’ve earned some good company. Recognize anyone?
Beyond their technical expertise, what truly stood out was how personally invested the team was in our success. They took the time to understand our business priorities and consistently aligned their work to meet those objectives.

We had an incredibly short and aggressive timeline that Envy Design Co. met, delivering an incredible website. After the websites were launched, leads continued to come in.

Their communication, attention to detail, and commitment to measurable outcomes made them feel like genuine partners rather than just a vendor. They are terrific.

Frequently asked questions.
Do you use WordPress themes or page builders?
No. We design every site from scratch and build a custom theme for it. That keeps the site fast and makes editing simpler, because every block was made for your content.
Off-the-shelf WordPress themes and page builders try to do everything for everyone, which usually means extra code, slower pages and an editor full of options you'll never use. A custom WordPress theme only includes what your site needs. Your team gets editing blocks designed for your actual content, such as service listings, team profiles or case studies, so pages stay consistent and on-brand even after we hand over the keys. It's also easier to maintain and update over time.
Will I be able to update the site myself?
Yes. That is the main reason to choose WordPress. We set up the editor around your content and train your team before launch.
When we build a custom WordPress website, we think about who will be editing it and what they'll need to change most often. News posts, events, team members, services, case studies and page content are all set up so they're easy to update without breaking the design. Before launch we walk your team through the editor, answer questions and make sure everyone feels comfortable. If something comes up later, we're a quick email away, and our maintenance plans include time for changes if you'd rather we handled them.
Can you redesign our existing WordPress site?
Yes. We can rebuild on WordPress with a fresh design, moving your content and setting up redirects so you keep your search rankings.
A WordPress redesign is a good opportunity to fix what isn't working: slow pages, a confusing editor, outdated plugins or a structure that no longer fits your business. We start by reviewing your current site and analytics, decide what content to keep, improve or retire, and then design and build a new custom theme. Redirects from old URLs to new ones are essential, so links, bookmarks and search engines all find the right pages. Your team gets a cleaner, faster site that's easier to manage.
Is WordPress secure?
WordPress is secure when it is built and maintained properly. We keep plugins to a minimum, harden logins and offer maintenance plans that handle updates, backups and monitoring.
Most WordPress security problems come from outdated software, abandoned plugins, weak passwords or bloated themes, not from WordPress itself. Building a custom theme with only the plugins you really need reduces the number of things that can go wrong. After launch, keeping WordPress core and plugins updated is the single most important habit, and our maintenance plans take care of it. Regular backups mean that if something does happen, your site can be restored. Good hosting matters too, and we're happy to advise.
How much does a custom WordPress website cost?
Custom websites at Envy start at $15,000, including design and development. The final price depends on the number of templates, features and integrations.
For a custom WordPress website, a few factors shape the cost: how many unique page layouts you need, whether you're moving content from an old site, integrations with tools like CRMs, booking systems or e-commerce, and any custom functionality like calculators or member areas. Content writing and SEO setup can be added too. We quote every project individually after learning about your goals, so you get a clear, itemized number rather than a package that doesn't quite fit.
